Inverted Center Proofs

Postby Roy » Tue May 06, 2014 3:00 am

Not to sound repetitious, but only as a reminder that I am most certainly a newbie to this great specialization, what are the opinions of others regarding proofs with inverted centers?

Are they all contrived, such as the four issues of the US 1869 pictorials? Unlike “production” stamps where genuine errors occur, is it fair to assume that a proof which is made with an inverted center could never be considered a true error?

Not unlike most all proof stamps, center invert proofs are generally far more stunning in appearance than their “production” counterparts. Moreover, even when purposefully made, their numbers are greatly limited.

What are your thoughts?

Good question. As they are quite rare themselves and also visually appealing, I make them part of my collection as sometimes perhaps the proofs were printed inverted by mistake and instead of being destroyed were saved or given or sold to us collectors.
