Nyassa Inverts, 1903 or 1922?

For anyone looking to have their inverted center stamp questions answered.

Nyassa Inverts, 1903 or 1922?

Postby Roy » Sat Feb 22, 2014 2:00 am

The story of these famed inverted centers is readily available in literature and on the internet, so no need to be repetitive here.

The question I have is that while all the known sources tell the story of these being an unintended “true” error in 1903, that the intentional re-issued “errors” of 1922 are distinguishable from the 1903 examples:

“It is possible, through careful examination, to tell the difference between the 1903 printing and the 1922 printing.”

OK fine…where does one find the key factors needed to make that determination?

In all prior auction listings of these beautiful gems (including Siegel), nowhere can I find any of them being distinguished one way or another as being either 1903, or 1922.

Ideas, thoughts, speculations…all warmly welcomed!

according to the Michel catalog the reprints have brighter colors - but that's it. Also, in Michel the original set is classified as printers waste, which would mean they were never issued, and none of them should exist used/on cover?!?

Welcome on board! This is the first time I heard they are listed as printers waste! I asked the owner of this site here http://www.nyassastamps.co.uk/1901.html who seems to be an expert on these to give me an idea how to tell the difference. He said the site explains it but I do not see anything that gives an indication on to what separates the originals from the reprints.

This is a reply from Giles Bennet who has a website dedicated to Nyassa stamps and I would say is an expert. He says..

"No, I mean the shape of the numbers is different. Look at the shape of the numbers in the top line of http://www.nyassastamps.co.uk/1903_asse ... prints.jpg against the bottom two lines.

That was in response on how to tell the difference, his website is at http://www.nyassastamps.co.uk/

He does answer to emails so if you guys want to ask him anything, his email is on the site too.
